Veteran superstar Akshay Kumar recently gave sharp, practical advice to all aspiring actors and newcomers in the film industry: never sign a three-film deal with any producer. This warning comes from decades of experience in Bollywood and was inspired by the themes explored in the recent web series, The Ba**ds of Bollywood.
Akshay Kumar delivered his advice directly from the stage at a recent awards ceremony, emphasizing that these multi-film contracts, often offered to debutants by major production houses, can severely restrict a young actor's career.
He explained that for a newcomer, getting locked into a contract for two or three films with a single banner immediately limits their freedom. If the debut film is a massive hit, the actor's market value skyrockets. However, the subsequent films in the deal are usually already locked at the initial, lower remuneration, preventing the star from capitalizing on their newfound success.
Even worse, if the first film fails, the production house may delay or even indefinitely postpone the remaining contracted films, effectively leaving the newcomer in professional limbo during the most crucial years of their career.
The advice gained particular attention because Akshay Kumar directly referenced Aryan Khan's directorial debut, The Bads of Bollywood. The series humorously and critically explores the tough realities of the industry, where a key plot point revolves around the protagonist being trapped in a restrictive multi-film contract.
Kumar noted, "You must have seen The Ba**ds of Bollywood and what our hero had to go through. The film makes it clear what a debutant should and should not do." By citing a contemporary and relevant piece of media, he underscored the very real-life difficulties that newcomers face when navigating binding agreements with powerful producers.
Akshay Kumar went a step further, offering a piece of wisdom that applies not just to actors, but to the industry itself. In a lighthearted yet pointed remark, particularly to co-host Karan Johar (whose production house has famously launched many debutants), he said, "Do not sign a 3-movie deal. Give your debutant freedom, allow them to run away. As it is said that 'let them free, if they belong to you, they will come back.'"
This statement champions the importance of allowing new talent to explore their potential across the whole industry. A production house should not have to rely on contractual obligations to retain an artist; genuine talent and strong relationships should be the real binding force. Kumar believes that an actor performs best when they have the freedom to choose scripts and collaborate widely.
The superstar also shared his personal career philosophy, which he attributes to his long-standing success. He advised newcomers to prioritize the quality of work over the size of the paycheck or the role.
"I always say money attracts money, and similarly, work attracts money. No work is big or small," he stated. Kumar explained that he has often taken on smaller roles in films simply because he believed in the story and wanted to be "part of history." He concluded by stressing that while talent gets you a break, discipline and a genuine focus on good work are the keys to a long and successful career in the demanding film industry.
